What happens when you call
Written out in full, because picking up the phone about something you do not understand is harder than anyone admits.
Who answers
A person, on the second or third call, during office hours. Not a menu, not a queue, not a call centre in another state. Usually Vera, Dale, Emmanuel or Yolanda, and you can see who they are before you dial if that helps.
Outside hours you get an answerphone with a real voice on it. Leave your name and number and we call back the next working morning.
How long it takes
A first call is usually fifteen to twenty-five minutes. If you are more than four months from your 65th birthday, it can be five: we will tell you your dates and ask you to call back nearer the time. That is a real answer, not a brush-off.
What we will ask you
- Your date of birth, or just the month and year, so we can work out your window
- Your ZIP code, because plans are local
- Whether you or a spouse still have health coverage from a job
- Which doctors you want to keep
- What you take, with the doses
Worth having to hand
- Your prescription bottles, or a list with doses
- Your red, white and blue Medicare card if you have one
- Your current plan card, if you have a plan
- The names of the doctors you want to keep
- Something to write with
If you do not have any of it, call anyway. We can do most of the first conversation without a single document.
What we will never ask for
- Your bank account or card number
- Your Social Security number, on a first call
- Money, of any kind, for any reason
Medicare will never cold-call you either, and nobody legitimate will pressure you to decide today. If someone does, hang up and call us or 1-800-MEDICARE.
What happens afterwards
- We send you what we said, in writing. By post if you prefer paper, and plenty of people do.
- You think about it for as long as you like. Nothing expires. If your enrollment window is closing we will tell you the actual date.
- If you decide to go ahead, the enrollment takes about fifteen minutes on a second call.
- We stay on your file. Next October we call you for the yearly review, and in between you can call about anything.
If you decide to do nothing, or to do it yourself, or to use somebody else, that is genuinely fine and you will not hear from us again.
If the phone is hard
Email us at hello@plainspokenmedicare.com and we will do the whole thing in writing. TTY users dial 711. If English is not your first language, ask and we will bring an interpreter onto the line at no cost to you. If you would like a family member to speak for you, we will send the one-page form that makes that permitted.
Three calls, roughly as they happened

Caller said: I turn 65 in April and four different companies have called me this week. I cannot tell which one of them is Medicare.
-
Plainspoken advisor replied: None of them. Medicare never cold-calls you. Let us start somewhere easier: are you still working?
-
Caller said: I finish at the end of March.
-
Plainspoken advisor replied: Then your window is already open and it closes at the end of July. We have time. Hospital and doctor parts this week, drug plan next week.
-
Caller said: That is the first thing anyone has said to me about this that I understood.
-
Caller said: My plan sent a letter. It is fourteen pages. I think my cardiologist is not in it any more but I honestly cannot tell.
-
Plainspoken advisor replied: Send me the first two pages and his name. I will check the 2026 network and call you back today.
-
Plainspoken advisor replied: He is out of network from January. Two other plans here in Lucas County still have him, and one of them keeps your pharmacy too.
-
Caller said: Fourteen pages, and you got it down to two sentences.
-
Caller said: I picked a supplement two years ago and now I would like a different one. Can I just switch?
-
Plainspoken advisor replied: You can apply. But outside your first six months a company is allowed to ask health questions and say no. I want you to know that before you cancel anything.
-
Caller said: Nobody told me that the first time.
-
Plainspoken advisor replied: I know. So let us find out whether you would be accepted first, and only then decide.
Now you know exactly what will happen.
Fifteen minutes, a person, no pressure and no list. If we are not the right people to help you, we will tell you who is.
