How we help
Medigap supplements
A second policy that pays what Original Medicare leaves you. Any doctor in the country who takes Medicare, no referrals, no approvals in advance, and a year you can predict.
Why the letters make this easy
Congress standardized supplement policies in 1992. Plan G from a company you have never heard of covers exactly what Plan G covers from the largest insurer in the country. The benefits are identical by law.
So the comparison is genuinely simple: pick the letter that matches how much risk you want to carry, then buy it from whoever charges least and raises rates most gently. That second part is the work.
Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin standardize supplements differently, so their plans do not use these letters.
What we do that a comparison site does not
- We quote every company licensed in your state, not the handful that pay for placement.
- We show how each company prices as you age. An attained-age policy rises every birthday. An issue-age or community-rated policy does not rise because you got older. The cheapest quote at 65 is often not the cheapest policy at 78, and this is the single most useful thing we can tell you.
- We show the rate-increase history we have on file for each company in your state. Two companies with identical premiums today can be $40 a month apart in six years.
- We check household and non-tobacco discounts. Many companies knock 5% to 12% off when two people in the same household both hold a policy, and plenty of people never get asked.
- We tell you when high-deductible Plan G is the better buy, which for healthy people with savings it often is.
Your six-month window
For six months from the moment you are both 65 and enrolled in Part B, any company must sell you any plan they offer at their standard rate, with no health questions. Outside it, in most states, they may ask and they may decline.
If you are inside that window now, this is the most time-sensitive thing on our whole site. See the dates.
Remember you also need a drug plan
A Medigap policy does not cover prescriptions. Original Medicare plus a supplement means you also buy a separate Part D plan, or you collect a lifelong penalty. We set both up in the same conversation.
Switching supplements later
You can apply to change companies at any time of year. Outside a protected window the new company can ask about your health and decline you, so the order matters: apply first, get accepted, and only then cancel the policy you have. We will never let you cancel first.
Some situations give you a guaranteed issue right, where a company must accept you: an employer plan ending, a plan leaving your area, or a Medicare Advantage plan you joined at 65 that you leave within the first twelve months. That last one is called the trial right and it is worth knowing about.
One call gets you the whole list.
Your age, ZIP code and whether you use tobacco. We come back with every company, sorted by price, with pricing method and rate history attached.
